Darmstadt Madonna - Hans Holbein. 1102 x 146 cm

This image is considered to be a true masterpiece of the Renaissance and is placed on a par with the works of Raphael. Even the contemporaries of the artist saw in her an undoubted resemblance to the Madonnas of this great Italian, and in their spirit and style the picture is undoubtedly southern - more colorful and refined than the strict and slightly chained images typical of the northern countries.

The painting was painted in the last year of the artist’s stay in Basel, before his departure to England. This is a custom-made image with an interesting plot that will seem somewhat unusual to a modern viewer. It is not just a classic biblical storyline depicting the Madonna and Child and the donor, that is, the customer who ordered and paid the artist the work of creating the canvas. Often, along with the donor, his family members were also portrayed. This is the unusual picture. It depicts the burgomaster Meyer himself, his daughter, a healthy and deceased spouse, as well as two other people who have still not been identified.

The picture is a complex multi-figure composition with a lot of details, which is typical for the works of this artist. In the background, the paintings depict spectacular architectural details in the form of a “shell” and the relief elements supporting it. Behind the characters is a greenish-turquoise background with interwoven branches.

The central figure of the picture is the Madonna with the baby Jesus in her arms. She has loose long, reddish hair, a luxurious golden crown with precious stones crowns her head. She is dressed in a dark blue-green dress with a long and narrow scarlet silk belt, with golden satin sleeves of her underwear. A silk olive cloak is thrown over his shoulders. Madonna has a tender and sad face, she looks at the child of Christ snuggled up to her.

The figures of the donor and his two wives are dressed in strict dark clothes, on both women there are deaf snow-white bandages that completely hide their hair and part of the face. Only the burgomaster’s daughter is dressed in white and gold clothes. A bright contrast to these dark colors is the mother-of-pearl pink body of the unknown child and the golden-ocher outfit of the young man holding him. By analogy with the presence of the deceased spouse of the customer on the canvas, it can be assumed that a sad young man and a small boy can be deceased members of the donor's family.

The impeccable craftsmanship of the artist in the smallest details reflected not only all the elements of complex and magnificent dresses and adornments, but also the facial expressions of the portrayed. They are recognizable, their faces are very lively, expressive. Of course, this picture is one of the masterpieces of world painting.
